Day 7- Claire

We started the day off with some animal crossing trivia. The trivia included the release date of animal crossing new leaf and the console it was meant for. Then finally what type of animal runs the museum. after trivia we had another competitive game of Kahoot, won by rose. Where we used our video game knowledge to choose what genre of game this music belonged to. After Kahoot, we attempted to play the Kahoot song on the boomwhackers. Then we learned how to put sound effects into sound traps and continued working on our projects.  Next, we analyzed the soundtrack of Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Each group had 4 songs and we looked for similarities between them, like motifs or instrumentation. We shared our findings back with the class and then had lunch.  After lunch, our video game tournament began, we played Step Mania 5 (Walmart Dance Dance Revolution). We went through a bracket with the winner being Mr. Lowery. Who knocked Matthew out in the boss battle. Afterward, we fi

Day 7 - Rose and Aliya

Day 7 of Gamer school began with the Questions of the Day, Kahoot, and Boomwackers. It seems that every day we get better and better at Boomwackers, and today was no exception with us hitting the main theme of Animal Crossing New Horizons out of the park. This perfectly set us up for the soundtrack analysis of the day, being that very game. We split into groups to listen to and connect three tracks representing the hours of the day. After sharing our findings, we worked on video game soundtracks of our own design with mine being about vampires and Aliya's being about baking. The highlight of the day for me though was watching Gloria play a rhythm game with Hatsune Miku in it. It seemed so difficult and it was funny to see her try again and again!       In the afternoon we began our daily videogame tournament with Trombone Champ. Trombone Champ is a game that simulates playing the trombone with your mouse and spacebar. The tournament was configured a bit different than usual, t

Music And Video Games Blog - Day 5 - The start of our project! - Ian N.

The day started with our walk-in question about Halo, which seemed to be much harder than the previous two. We later played Kahoot which we would use to attempt to identify Video game bosses with their musical themes. We then used our boom whackers to recreate the lost woods from Zelda The Ocarina of time. After a short break, we began identifying/Analyzing soundtracks from Mario Sunshine, in which we used our elements of music to find the differences between the original soundtrack and the chosen soundtracks from the different game levels. After our break, we began to brainstorm in preparation for our project in which we have to create musical themes for the videogame concept areas we created! To do this we were taught how to navigate SoundTrap , which is a music production studio software made in 2013, in which you can create your own music for free. This work on SoundTrap helped us broaden our view on making background music and how to incorporate it into a specific theme. These fi

Today marked the first of many video game tournaments in our course. After lunch, we competed in several rounds of Champion Island , a google doodle game that honored the Tokyo Olympics of summer 2021. We competed in sports like archery, skateboarding, synchronized swimming, and rock climbing. Eventually, my teammates (Claire, Jaycie, and Gloria) and I prevailed over the competition, but not without some very close calls and intense trash talk. After the tournament, we watched a speedrun of The Magical Quest ft. Mickey Mouse , which concluded our day. Claire, running a marathon. Although the tournament was the highlight, we did some other stuff in the morning. We began the day with a soundtrack analysis of Yoshi's Crafted World. The game has a very interesting soundtrack because it uses the same beat for every song in the game. Depending on which area you visit, it will adapt that beat into a specific song for that place. Claire and I analyzed the volcano soundtrack, and it wa

Gamers Day Out! - Gloria and Jaycie

After our amazing slumber at our fantastic hotel we woke up to get ready for our trip to the National Videogame Museum!!!   In the museum there were multiple og games and gaming consoles!  We learned all about the history of video games. When they were made, how they impacted the gaming community/industry , and how popular they were and became. These were not the only things we learned about games. We also learned that the gaming industry had some pretty rough issues.  Completion against brands, the overwhelming amount of games that were made during the great video game crash, and unlicensed dupes of games.  While we were there, we had the opportunity to actually play with older consoles! Super cool. After our visit to the museum, and the gift shop, we headed down to Cidercade Dallas where we got to play Mariokart, more racing games, dance, and more! Our day out was now coming to an end, but we just COULDN’T skip out on our last trip to Bucc-ees! And it was definitely a trip!

January 5, 2023 We began our second class today with a video game "question of the day" about Sonic the Hedgehog. The three questions were; what year did sonic the hedgehog come out, what console was the game originally made for, and who is the villain that sonic has to fight? We then dove into the history of video games and we worked in groups to create sections of timelines that displayed the history of video games.  After working on this, we took a break and returned to learn about "Music in video games". We began by learning about how sound waves work and then watching/listening to gameplay from old games. we then analyzed the sounds and described what we heard. After that, we had lunch and prepared for our drive up to Dallas. About halfway through our ride we quickly stopped at BUC-EECS to stop for snacks. When we got to the hotel we put our bags in our rooms, and returned to the lobby where we met before heading to our dinner. We had dinner at the local taco

Music and Video Games - Day 1 - Nate and Micah

Music and Video Games day 1 By: Nate and Micah  We started the day by walking in and answering questions about the theme music for today's class. Our walk-in music was the theme of Mario. This will be a fun game that we play at the start of every class to discover the theme for the day! After answering questions about today's theme song, we learned about the music and video game industry. Next Mr. Lowry taught us about the elements of music so that we could have a good basis for understanding. These elements included: instrumentation, tempo, rhythm, texture, pitch, and dynamics. Additionally, we learned the necessary vocabulary to engage in these deep discussions on multiple aspects of the video game industry. Then we explored how music can be used as a tool in video games to set the feel of a scene or level for a player. We put this to the test by identifying the correct setting in a video game by listening to music played in the setting. Pictured below is our class using boom
