1/9/23 Music and Video Games Blog - The First Tournament - Ashley

Today marked the first of many video game tournaments in our course. After lunch, we competed in several rounds of Champion Island, a google doodle game that honored the Tokyo Olympics of summer 2021. We competed in sports like archery, skateboarding, synchronized swimming, and rock climbing. Eventually, my teammates (Claire, Jaycie, and Gloria) and I prevailed over the competition, but not without some very close calls and intense trash talk. After the tournament, we watched a speedrun of The Magical Quest ft. Mickey Mouse, which concluded our day.

Claire, running a marathon.

Although the tournament was the highlight, we did some other stuff in the morning. We began the day with a soundtrack analysis of Yoshi's Crafted World. The game has a very interesting soundtrack because it uses the same beat for every song in the game. Depending on which area you visit, it will adapt that beat into a specific song for that place. Claire and I analyzed the volcano soundtrack, and it was really interesting how they were able to create a song that's so similar to the main theme while conveying a very specific idea of the place you're visiting in-game. After our brief analyses, we learned to play the main theme with boomwhackers. Overall, it was both a fun and educational day of class.
